Joseph Egan, VP and CIO

Joseph (Joe) Egan currently serves as Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Valley Children’s Healthcare. With a distinguished career spanning more than two decades, Egan brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the organization’s technology division.

Egan embarked on his technology journey in 1997 as a computer consultant, laying the foundation for his remarkable career. He joined Valley Children's Hospital in 1998, where he held various roles, including computer technician, network analyst, network engineer and senior network engineer. Notably, he focused on technologies vital to the patient care experience, such as virtualization and disaster recovery.

In 2012, Egan transitioned to the field of information security, assuming the pivotal role of manager of Information Security for Valley Children's. His leadership and innovative mindset paved the way for the hospital's Information Security program, fortifying its defenses in an ever-evolving digital landscape. By 2015, he had ascended to the position of director of Information Security, where his strategic insights continued to enhance the organization’s cybersecurity posture.

In 2019, Egan undertook the role of Director of Technology and IT Security, leading the team through the complex tasks of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) replacement and, in 2020, the seamless implementation of Epic systems – the first-ever Epic implementation in the country done remotely. His forward-thinking approach was instrumental in devising work-from-home solutions that proved invaluable during the challenges posed by the global pandemic.

Expanding his responsibilities further, Egan was appointed Assistant CIO in 2021, assuming operational oversight of the IT division. His visionary approach and commitment to excellence played a pivotal role in reshaping Valley Children’s IT teams, creating clear career paths and restructuring the organization’s IT governance framework.

In May 2022, Egan assumed the role of Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO). Under his leadership, Valley Children's IT division has undergone a remarkable transformation, aligning with his philosophy that technology is a partnership. Egan firmly believes that technology should be owned by operational leaders and leveraged to provide exceptional care, with an unwavering emphasis on customer service as the cornerstone of success.

With a bachelor’s degree in information technology and a Master of Science in information security and assurance, Egan personifies the values of innovation, expertise and an unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare technology for the betterment of Valley Children’s patients and staff.
