Clinical Laboratory Scientist Training Program

Valley Children’s Hospital’s Laboratory offers a training program for individuals that have completed a Bachelor’s Degree and looking for the next step in becoming a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Interns in this program will spend 52 weeks rotating through the Lab in preparation to become a Laboratory generalist and qualify to take the California state licensing exam. Our full service clinical laboratory includes a Core Lab (Hematology, Coagulation, Chemistry, Urinalysis), Transfusion Service, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Point of Care Testing, and Referral Testing Department. The objectives of the program are to provide the required 12 month clinical practical rotation through various sections of the lab and also provide supplemental information through self-directed didactic material to prepare Interns for the CA licensure exam.

Training is full-time Monday through Friday, including one full Didactic day weekly.

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist Training Program (CA CCR 1032) includes a 12-month clinical rotation in the following areas:

  • Bacteriology - 9 weeks
  • Chemistry - 12 weeks
  • Hematology - 8 weeks
  • Immunohematology - 7 weeks
  • Serology/Immunology - 1 week
  • Serology/Molecular Biology - 3 weeks
  • Parasitology - 3 weeks
  • Phlebotomy - 1 week
  • Urinalysis - 4 weeks
  • Reviews - 2 weeks


Admission Requirements

  • The applicant must possess a baccalaureate degree.
  • The applicant must meet the requirements for a California Trainee License to include but not limited to:
    • 16 semester or equivalent quarter units of chemistry, which must include clinical chemistry OR analytical and biochemistry
    • 18 semester or equivalent quarter units of biological science, including instruction in hematology, immunology, and medical microbiology which may include bacteriology, mycology, virology and parasitology
    • 3 semester or equivalent quarter units of physics including instruction in principles of light and electricity
    • A course in genetics and/or molecular biology and statistics is recommended
  • The applicant must have submitted an application and has received a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist Trainee License by the time an interview has been scheduled.
  • Produce transcripts of college work (unofficial are acceptable to upload on website for application.) Official transcripts will be needed for CDPH Trainee License and should be brought to the interview.
  • Submit a resume and a letter of intent
  • On site interview

Applicants apply to the training program by completing the employment application and uploading recommendation letters, transcripts, resume, license verification and other documents that show intent. If unable to upload documents (sealed letters of recommendation or similar documents) please mail to the hospital in care of the Laboratory Education Coordinator. Upon completion of training, students will take a state licensure examination.
 

Program Availability

The training program application process begins in Fall for applications on the hospital careers website for the following calendar year class of interns.
